DESCRIPTION


This course is designed for mental health clinicians working with or hoping to work with children under the age of 5 years. The course will focus on utilizing observation, screening and assessment to determine necessary treatment components and implementation of evidence-based practices and treatments to meet the developmental needs of young children and families. Structuring biopsychosocial assessments, treatment planning, referral and intervention/session structure will be addressed. 


Registration fee includes light continental breakfast and afternoon refreshments and Certificate of Completion and/or Continuing Education Units and session handouts. Lunch will not be provided.

Course Objectives:


1. Develop an understanding of basic principles of a variety of dyadic and family therapeutic approaches for prevention and intervention. 


2. Gain knowledge of and skill in implementing developmentally appropriate, evidence-based and best practice interventions.

3. Learn developmental guidance and developmentally appropriate strategies for common problems in early childhood (tantrums, sleeping, eating, crying, regulation).


4. Understand how to use observation, screening, and assessment to determine necessary components for the individual infant, young child, and family.


5. Understand how to select and use specific components of assessments for birth to 5-year-olds and their caregivers within scope of practice and training.


6. Review the use of components of assessment including observations, interviews, standardized and non-standardized tests, and other professional reports, as appropriate, to provide multidimensional assessment.


Who should attend:


This workshop is essential for anyone working with young children and families in a mental health setting including mental health clinicians, clinical case workers, home visitors and administrators. 


Presenter:


Julie Torok-Mangasarian, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, registered play therapist-supervisor, infant mental health specialist, and certified educator of infant massage (CEIM). Julie is the Clinical Director of the California Psychological Institute in Fresno, CA. Julie has been endorsed by the California Center for Infant-Family and Early Childhood Mental Health as an Infant-Family and Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist and Reflective Practice Mentor. Julie specializes in the treatment of complex and developmental trauma in young children. Julie has specialized training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), play therapies (Theraplay®, client-centered play therapy and Filial Therapy) and Reflective Practice Supervision. Julie enjoys supporting clinicians in discovering new approaches to serving young children and families.
