Ambiguous Loss can be: grieving the loss of someone physically absent but psychologically present OR someone physically present but psychologically absent.
For families and couples living with physical disabilities, the experience can be a sense of loss for the person with the disability and for spouses and family members.
This group will discuss the concept of Ambiguous Loss as outlined by Pauline Boss, PhD in her books and articles, and explore the unique experiences of these couples and families regarding day-to-day adjustments, travel, defining family roles, occupational/career challenges, social attitudes, and creating goals for the future.
Facilitated by:
Jenni Odell, MA, Marriage and Family Therapist Intern (IMF#72680) under the supervision of Dr. DaLene Forester, LMFT (Lic. #MFC33095)
Jenni has experience working with couples and families experiencing issues of ambiguous loss as a result of physical disabilities, mental illness, cognitive impairment, death and divorce, and co-conducted a qualitative study of couples wherein the male has a spinal cord injury, presented at AAMFT 2012.
