 STRANGULATION

Strangulation in domestic violence situations is very common and the incidence is on the rise.  Most victims are women who are attacked by a male member of their own household.  Most victims are strangled repeatedly and there are multiple possible consequences including delayed death and eventual murder by the assailant.  Domestic violence crimes cross all socioeconomic lines.  Victims sometimes reveal the extent of the attacks if specifically asked by an informed therapist, medical provider, clergy, or other counselor.  Timely advice from a counselor who has up to date information regarding these injuries can save lives and aid victims in making informed life choices.

 Learning objectives:

Recognize the signs and symptoms of strangulation.

Understand the impact of Trauma Bonding on victims of domestic violence strangulation.

Identify successful intervention strategies for the victim and family.
