DEATH with DIGNITY
Choosing to die is a sensitive and controversial topic. Along with legal and ethical considerations, some of the other issues pertaining to this topic include personal rights, spiritual beliefs, emotional stability, family dynamics and many more. Join us for an informative two-person panel with Dr. Patty Bay, PsyD, LMFT and Dr. Ron Sand, MD.
DR. PATTY BAY:
Patricia L. Bay, Psy.D. is a Licensed Marriage, Family Therapist with a private practice in Redding, California. Since 1979 she has loved working with children, adolescents, adults, families and relationships in Shasta, Tehama, Butte, Trinity and Siskiyou Counties, and surrounding areas of northern California. Prior to private practice, she worked for Child Protective Services doing sexual abuse investigation and is considered an expert witness in court proceedings. Patricia enjoys conducting trainings and workshops to pass onto others what she has learned.
When Patty's husband, Richard, became ill with the terminal brain disease Frontotemporal Degeneration - Behavioral Variant Type (bvFTD), both Patty and Richard were committed to educating others about FTD. At the same time they became involved with the right to choose your own "Death With Dignity" and offered support in bringing this benefit to the State of California. Patricia continues the quest to educate others, especially mental health professionals.
DR. RON SAND:
I am a practicing Palliative Care physician in Shasta County. I grew up in Sonoma County, California, graduate from the UC Davis School of Medicine and went on to complete a Family Medicine residency in Tucson.
I have worked for several years in end-of-life care in our area as a hospice physician. This past year I began a private practice in Palliative Care involving both hospital and home based care through which I care for people experiencing severe, progressive illnesses who benefit from a team based approach to allow them to live with the best quality of life possible. My partners in this work are SRMC and Medical Home Care Professionals.
I have participated in the care of patients who have requested physician aid in dying and presented information on the California law to local professional groups and the public.
