DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to help individuals working with young children identify and understand the impact of prolonged, unaddressed stress on the infant/toddler/preschooler and the parent-child dyad. Additionally, the course will review how chronic stress may lead to interference with brain development, emotional regulation and can contribute to child maltreatment. This workshop is also designed to explore the phenomenon of resilience in infants and preschoolers. Lastly, the course will explore risks to very young children including family dynamics, atypical development, sensory issues and community violence. 

Registration fee includes light continental breakfast and afternoon refreshments and Certificate of Completion and/or Continuing Education Units and session handouts. Lunch will not be provided

Course Objectives:


1. Define and discuss the impact of chronic trauma on young children and families.

2. Identify common resilience factors for young children and families.

3. Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the cumulative risk factors that negatively impact infant and family well-being. 
4. Identify the impact of biological and psychosocial factors on brain development, parent-child relationships and emotional wellness. 

Who should attend: This workshop is essential for anyone working with young children and families including educators, health professionals, mental health clinicians, home visitors and case managers.

Presenter:

Julie Torok-Mangasarian, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, registered play therapist-supervisor, infant mental health specialist, and certified educator of infant massage (CEIM). Julie is the Clinical Director of the California Psychological Institute in Fresno, CA. Julie has been endorsed by the California Center for Infant-Family and Early Childhood Mental Health as an Infant-Family and Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist and Reflective Practice Mentor. Julie specializes in the treatment of complex and developmental trauma in young children. Julie has specialized training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), play therapies (Theraplay®, client-centered play therapy and Filial Therapy) and Reflective Practice Supervision. Julie enjoys supporting clinicians in discovering new approaches to serving young children and families.
