Presenter: Peggy 'Alena Marie' Farver, MA, Art Therapist, LMFT#35155


Alena Marie Farver is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been a practicing Art Therapist in Far Northern California over the past 40 years. She is a 1982 graduate in Art Therapy from College of Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, CA, represented the Northern California Art Therapy Association providing information and workshops throughout California, Oregon, and Washington. As the founding director of the Expressive Arts Studio: Counseling Centre for Creative Integration since 1994, Alena Marie has provided classes, workshops, consultation and program development for various community agencies such as the Shasta County Arts Council, Women's Refuge, Hospice, Probation and Juvenile Assessment Center, Mental Health Day Treatment Programs, Shasta Community College, public schools and the Community Health Center. As a member of the International Labyrinth Society, Alena Marie has also been involved in the education, building and integration of the labyrinth as a therapeutic tool into existing community programs.


From August of 2009 - May of 2016, Alena Marie served as a Military, Family Life Counselor for military families and children in the schools. She had the honor to serve in all four branches of the military throughout California, Japan and Okinawa, completing her last assignment in the Mohave Desert. She has also had the opportunity, as a worship painter and teacher in the ‘prophetic arts’ to volunteer with several churches throughout her travels. She resides in Redding, CA where she works as a Community Art Therapist for the Shasta Community Health Center, having recently retired from 5 years of work with the Center for Behavioral Health (In-patient unit) at Shasta Regional Medical Center. In her private practice, as a Certified Grief Educator, Alena Marie specializes in trauma and grief utilizing expressive arts, sandplay and brainspotting. She also provides a program called “Back in Touch: The Art to Heart Connection”© Training for professionals. She integrates these modalities with a solution HOPE focused model using Cognitive & Dialectical Behavioral Therapy approaches for all ages: individuals, couples and families. She is the single parent/grandmother of two adult daughters and 5 grandchildren. 



Learning Objectives:

In this 75 minute presentation, Alena Marie will review for clinical application, the Six Needs of the Grieving together with the Kubler-Ross Model of the Stages of Loss and Grief. She will highlight the latest Sixth Stage recently added to these stages by International Grief expert, David Kessler. Alena will also explain how these stages correlate with the Six Stages of Change, allowing for a return to purpose in the lives of ourselves and our clients. Through experiential presentation, Alena Marie will also introduce the “Felt Sense” somatic expression and how the Expressive Arts can assist in this healing process.


Following this presentation, participants will be able to:


1. Learn the Six Needs of the Grieving, for clinical application in the treatment of Grief.


2. Identify and explain the Six Stages of Loss, Grief and Death (Kubler-Ross & Kessler)


3. Identify and explain how the Six Stages of Change correlate with the Six Stages of Loss & Grief. (Wheeler & Farver)


4. Learn the clinical benefit for using “Felt-Sense” somatic expression & journaling through a ‘hands-on’, experiential exercise.


This course is designed for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs.
